ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the mental health challenges that surround long-term injury. While there is a wealth of evidence that clearly demonstrates long-term injury leaves athletes psychologically vulnerable to a range of psychological issues including depression, anxiety and eating disorders, current practice is to simply treat the physical injury. However, there is an alternative approach that can be taken which offers athletes better rehabilitation experiences and integrates psychological support with physical recovery. The case study presented the RETURN protocol seen through the eyes of three experienced practitioners who have delivered it for a number of years in a professional academy football club.
