ABSTRACT

The athlete is presenting a range of symptoms, such as difficulty sleeping, fluctuating moods, and low self-esteem, that is potentially linked to overtraining and has had the view for some time that the training programme is mismatched to their needs. The athlete subsequently sees the team doctor and presents ill-health indicators. Generative individuals also often have the ability to understand and share the thoughts or feelings of another. Sport is going through a recalibration period and the wellbeing area is one that can’t be solved with a compliance check, tick-box approach. If this is what is adopted by the sport system, there is a significant risk that sport will go into an abyss as people will lose trust in sport and do other things with their valuable time – and not have the opportunity to benefit from all positive impacts highlighted by the chapter authors that sport brings.
