What makes a township a neighbourhood?

In this chapter we consider Eldorado Park, a residential area in Johannesburg conventionally referred to through the apartheid-era moniker of township, through the concept of neighbourhood. In doing so, we question the assumed spatial-descriptive referent of the signifier neighbourhood, but in the process we ask whether thinking of the township through the concept of neighbourhood might in fact offer new insights into South African urban thought.
