ABSTRACT

This chapter contextualizes India’s development experience from multi-track perspectives. It presents the key contours of the prospects and challenges in the development pathway. The assessment of development in the context of democracy and democratization has led, in recent years, to an increasing focus on the emergence of the “rest of the world” as an important site for the practice of democracy, development, and governance. It is clear that the experience of citizens with regard to obtaining state services shapes their perceptions of the responsiveness of the state. The chapter summarizes the key formulations on India’s development strategy and its wider implications for a non-Western framework for analysis. The centrality of the process of democratic governance merits elaboration as it appears to be at the core of both the successes and challenges of the developmental process.
