ABSTRACT

This chapter uses a creative life narrative PhD as a case study for the process of securing low-risk human ethics approval within a university. It outlines some of the specific challenges faced in negotiating this process at Flinders University (South Australia), such as how to conduct interviews that are ethical but flexible, the navigation of ongoing consent, and the emergence of unexpected subjects. The aim is to provide a useful case study for life writing practitioners as they work with these structures at their own institutions.
