      ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the various forms of betrayal which can present themselves in the analytic relationship and, more generally, in the human relationship. James Joyce’s works often emphasise the contradictions between all that belongs to the natural and instinctual dimension, and the evolutions of human thought. The analytic device creates links of a high emotional intensity and allows to experience in vivo what happens in the relational life of us all. The linguistic level of the interaction requires a sequence of small communicative incidents which activate a series of more or less effective responses which the couple tries to construct. The narrative levels cut across each other, and the text is made up of the linguistic games, allegories, allusions, ambiguities, metamorphoses: a representation of the chaos of human life using portmanteau words which require the reader to make choices and to pay great attention to the harmonies.
