ABSTRACT

Gerald H. Read was a designer and an organizer, always looking for practical, concrete, and innovative solutions to problems, most often based on creating connections between people. Read graduated from North High School in Akron in 1932, meaning that he was in high school and college during the Depression, perhaps contributing to his lifelong reputation for frugality. Although Read is perhaps best known for the study tours, he contributed to Comparative and International Education Society and to the comparative education field in a number of other ways. In 1968–1970, Read also was active in the founding meetings and initial funding of what became the World Council of Comparative Education Societies. Many of his publications were short articles for Phi Delta Kappan, a widely read professional journal, or the History of Education Journal, then published at the University of Michigan under Claude Eggertsen.
