ABSTRACT
Co-editor Stephen Vogel provides a brief summary of the postindustrial condition of Detroit in the time period covered by the book (1993–present) and the response of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture to this post-industrial condition. The chapter discusses the search for a new hybrid landscape appropriate to the conditions found in Detroit and for the creation of an ecological urbanism for the city. The chapter then briefly describes the school’s response in its three major components: founding of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center; creation of the Master of Community Development degree program; and the hiring of primarily women to staff the design center and teach in the architecture and community development program as well as practice in the city.
