ABSTRACT

The chapter explores how the pervasive accessibility of digital communication technologies has an impact on the idea of heterotopia. I critically examine claims that some conceptions of the internet or certain online sites might be identified as heterotopia. Finding such claims problematic and suggestive, I investigate ways in which heterotopia might be seen in the context of the interface between humans and technology. Taking up thoughts from Michel Serres, I argue for a repositioning of heterotopia in terms of an emerging digital environment. Finally, I turn to Foucault’s textual version of heterotopia as a stimulus for discovering creative ways to reimagine the global in our digital environment.
