ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book describes the interesting and innovative ways in which literally millions of Chinese-speaking students are engaging with the English language and participating actively in the global knowledge economy of the 21st century. It explores diverse procedures by which teachers can facilitate the attainment of syntactic, pragmatic, and rhetorical complexity by their students. The book examines various aspects of the development of academic writing in both Taiwan and China. It explains the emergence of newer technologies. Such technologies are being used to facilitate the teaching and learning of English in both rural and urban areas—a phenomenon that is rapidly spreading worldwide. It was impossible to imagine in 1979 what a “sea change” there would be in the educational and linguistic landscape of China over such a brief span of time.
