ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at the Byzantine reach into Central Asia. Sarris discusses the Eurasian trading systems which directed goods to the Byzantine world. He shows how much these mattered to the Byzantines and the Sasanian Persians, and he shows how this network of exchange (often called the Silk Road) demonstrates the degree to which Byzantine wealth and demand stretched into and interacted with Central Asian political structures.
