ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the concept of cultural capital, using the example of Byzantine brides sent to foreign countries and the entourages they were expected to bring with them. Wainwright discusses the way in which Byzantine marriage alliances in the long tenth century, particularly, but not only, with relation to western Europe, show the interlinking of the Byzantine world with the western third of Eurasia.
