Seen from across the Sea

This chapter introduces the idea of the Byzantine invention of global connections. Darley argues that the Byzantines used India exclusively as a reflection of their own desires and fears; it was a passive other, essentialised and used as a sounding board for other ideas. She argues that to have a global perspective requires distance, opportunity, and exposure and that the Byzantines used these to pin India into its hierarchical worldview.
