ABSTRACT
Conditions and healthcare provision in prison settings have improved in recent decades. However, there remains a need for evidence-based healthcare to be implemented. Clinical research in prison settings needs to support the implementation of current treatments appropriately for prisoners and support the development of evidence-based gold-standard practices. This chapter will explore why this approach has major barriers and challenges. It will present an overview of the historical context of research in prison and discuss the exploitation of prisoners in research and the development of necessary ethical governance of research in prison settings.
