ABSTRACT
The first elements of this chapter will apply the four pillars of biomedical ethics, introduced in Chapter 6, to ethical research in prison. The four pillars will be explored against the realities of completing research in the prison setting, and some of the complexities raised in Chapter 7 will be further discussed. This will be followed by a framework to support the development of an ethical research protocol for prison research. The final element will address the practicalities of implementing ethical research to support an understanding of the ‘unseen’ gatekeepers that influence recruitment, disclosure and the personal safety and well-being of the researchers.
