ABSTRACT

Story and storytelling for sustainability manifest in a variety of forms including creative writing, novels, and film. The latter of these, film, is particularly powerful given how readily accessible it now is on the internet for a wide range of ages and interests. Film can be used to intentionally explore perspectives in relation to sustainability issues, in terms of (1) the range of sustainable development goals, (2) the interconnectedness of sustainability goals (e.g. poverty, education, decent work), and/or (3) the complexities within a single sustainable development goal (e.g. good health and well-being).

This chapter provides a range of teaching and learning resources, utilising a triage of film clips (readily accessible on the internet) to generate new insights into sustainability across a range of study levels. The resources are specifically designed for the context of contexts and include (1) “Sci-Fi Protagonist Perspectives” (for use in tutor-led sessions), (2) “Sci-Fi Words for Well-Being’ (activities for use across three sessions), and (3) “Film Triage for Complex Awareness” (learner-led activities to be used over three sessions).

The learning outcomes include

developing business and management students’ awareness of multiple perspectives and the interrelatedness of those in relation to sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

enhancing understanding of the emotional effects of story and business narratives and how these might be adopted to promote awareness of sustainability and the SDGs.

promoting collaborative working amongst business and management students to communicate and evaluate sustainability issues and possible solutions.
