ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a brief overview of the theoretical and empirical bases for the behavioral principles described in subsequent chapters. Integration of the interventions within a multi-tiered system of support framework is also discussed. As a preview for the format of the chapters, essential elements of effective intervention plans are outlined (i.e., identifying target behaviors; operational definitions of the target behaviors; data on present levels of performance; description of contextual variables; problem analysis involving functionally-driven hypotheses; progress monitoring and data collection methods; specification of intervention goals; detailed intervention plans; fidelity and interobserver agreement plans; intervention acceptability; evaluation of intervention effects relative to the stated intervention goals). Attention to collaboration and ensuring intervention fit by considering multiple contextual factors is discussed.
