ABSTRACT

Response Cost Raffle and Mystery Motivator interventions potentially enhance the power of punishers such as loss of tokens (i.e., Response Cost Raffle) or reinforcers by adding an element of surprise (i.e., Mystery Motivator). In a Response Cost Raffle, the penalty is left to chance (e.g., a drawing to see if a response cost procedure is in place, or the magnitude of that cost is left to chance). Mystery Motivators can involve the nature or amount of surprise reinforcers available during a specified time period. A system involving these elements is presented using an elementary classroom example targeting academic engagement and disruptive behaviors.
