ABSTRACT

When Michigan Radio reporter Dustin Dwyer first got involved in a partnership with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to do a series exploring infant mortality and other challenges faced by economically insecure kids in the state, he had no idea how much he would come to identify with his subjects and reflect on the kind of journalist he wanted to be. This Q&A discusses the origins, lessons and outcomes of the hundreds of stories the National Public Radio station aired between 2012 and 2017 as part of its State of Opportunity project.
