ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the findings of a content analysis of the coverage of poverty by the leading business newspaper in Spain between 2015 and 2019. The main goal of the chapter is to provide a descriptive empirical analysis that serves as an interesting case to learn how business news presents poverty in developed countries. The findings show that the fight against poverty is treated as a public concern more often than a corporate concern in Spanish business news. Consequently, government is the most frequent sector discussed in business news concerning poverty, followed by banking and finance and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The topics that are most commonly discussed include labor and financial inclusion/exclusion, social housing, energy and food poverty. Finally, the tone of the discussion is mostly positive, which reflects the optimism of the media concerning the development of public/private initiatives to reduce poverty.
