ABSTRACT

When Jiquanda Johnson was covering the Flint water crisis for the MLive Media Group/The Flint Journal, she knew that Flint’s whole story was not being told. A “Flint girl” herself, Johnson decided to start her own online website, Flint Beat, to report on news that mattered to all the neighborhoods in her hometown using an approach known as solutions journalism. Now, it is not about clicks and metrics. It is about trust and authenticity. In this Q&A, Johnson shares her insights about local and national coverage of the Flint water crisis and how to do journalism that (literally) makes people break into applause.
