ABSTRACT

Monica Morales started her daily TV segment, “Monica Makes It Happen” on PIX 11 in New York City in 2016 not long after losing her mother. She said that is not a coincidence. Now, a mother of two herself, she found that her mother’s death and having kids of her own pushed her into a new kind of reporting. She was tired of telling stories that did not get much in the way of results. She dreamed of going into underserved communities and helping people fight the system, especially moms. She got her wish. This Q&A explains Morales’ “little stories” approach to covering the big problem of poverty, describes how she developed her award-winning segment, shares some of her success stories, and draws out lessons from her work.
