Theories and methods in the history of emotions

This chapter surveys the theoretical questions and methodological scaffolds that frame the history of emotions. It accounts for the emergence of the field in recent decades and the interdisciplinary dialogue with the life sciences and social sciences that nourished it. The chapter presents the major challenges confronting historians of emotions and examines the main conceptual tools that have been developed to address these. Finally, it considers some promising areas of current research.
