ABSTRACT
This chapter offers an overview of the impact of testing and accountability frameworks on Latinx students, including an overview of key education policies, legal cases, and assessment frameworks to inform this collection of research on the educational experience of Latinx students in US education contexts. Historically and presently, the national assessment of educational progress scores have consistently shown significant gaps in student achievement across all content areas examined between Latino/White groups, which suggests that educational equity remains a challenge for Latinos in public school contexts. The comprehensive approach to assessment creates opportunities to allocate resources to those students most in need of improvement while simultaneously increasing pressure on stakeholders to improve test scores. States have the potential to utilize assessment of students to improve content, offer new approaches to curriculum delivery, and inform the policy arena on the additional investments necessary to raise Latinx achievement and diminish gaps in test performance.
