ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the body of educational literature on Latinx/a/o communities who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. It offers salient themes that emerge when examining the scholarship on Latinx/a/o LGBTQ+ people in K–12 and higher education disciplines. With the rampant racist nativism that has recently manifested following the 2016 election, as well as the changes in policies affecting the lives of LGBTQ+ people, educational agents must attend to needs of these students. To examine Latinx/a/o LGBTQ+ students’ relationship with their family means to wrestle with conversations around the cultural norms around gender and sexuality in the Latinx/a/o community. Importantly, queer of color critique has found its way into K–12 education and in higher education, representing a way to study the lives of queer people of color broadly, including Latinx/a/o LGBTQ+ people. The chapter concludes with several recommendations on where educational research can go in the future to better understand the diversity of experiences that Latinx/a/o LGBTQ+ people face.
