ABSTRACT

Student mobility and international exchange among universities are not sufficient for actual, effective internationalized education. There are always invisible borders separating students coming to host universities based on different countries, regions, cultures, and borders separating all study abroad populations from the members of local communities. These invisible borders are even more difficult to overcome than those of geographic distance or language differences. This chapter presents a pedagogical strategy to use the dynamics of these invisible borders to engage students in interactions fostering meaningful intercultural communicative experiences. The strategy is based on teachers' interventions consisting in a design of educational activities that move the borders by setting appropriate goals, responsibilities or roles.
