ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this political party was to drive Jews out of Romania. The purpose of the Union is to fight, through all legal means, for the reinforcement of Romanian economic, political and cultural interests against the Yids. The Romanian farmer sells his produce at below cost price. Antisemitic students threatened and assaulted Jewish students and their professors. A politics of independence encourages patriotic Romanianism, in place of political parties that always do the bidding of foreigners. Codreanu opened the first legionary cooperative in September 1935 as part of a campaign to ‘take back’ commerce from the Jews and put it in Romanian hands. Attempts by the authorities to prevent the Legion from contesting the 1933 elections resulted in increased violence, along with the suppression of the Legion’s paramilitary units, the Iron Guard.
