ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the subject of professional development in singing as an interconnected space between theory and practice, as a means of motivating and empowering teachers to motivate and empower their students. The Choral Music Experience (CME) Institute for Choral Teacher Education curriculum, which Doreen created, exemplifies the intersections between theory and practice – the space between university degree programmes and the highest standards of professional expertise. The CME approach is significantly different to other forms of professional learning for music and singing. The space between theory and practice often feels enormous. Academic research often lacks immediate classroom applicability. The space is also infused with the sense of community and collaboration. Building opportunities to assure transformative experience requires a deep and long-term commitment to performance excellence. The culturally diverse and historically distinguished repertoire is included for its artistic, educational and social values.
