ABSTRACT

At present, the main groups of Afghan mujaheddin have pledged themselves in a loose alliance or coalition, which was formed on 16 May 1985. Without doubt the 1985 alliance or coalition among the seven groups of fundamentalists; and liberals was created as a result of pressure by a number of Islamic countries, notably Pakistan and Saudi Arabia who had been contributing more than any other source to the strength of the resistance including large amounts of funds for humanitarian purposes to Afghan refugees. The mujaheddin leaders were also under constant pressure from their own compatriots to create a broadly based unity among their groups. The new alliance was announced by the seven leaders in a ‘joint communique’ at a press conference, 16 May 1985. The seven Peshawar-based mujaheddin leaders had established a joint military committee even before their agreement to form the new alliance.
