ABSTRACT

With the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviets, agricultural activities have declined very sharply. Agricultural production factors such as the labour force, commercial fertilizers, improved seed varieties, agricultural machinery, animal power, irrigation, agricultural extension services, etc. have been disturbed by the war. The Russians have tried to create famine, poverty and starvation in the villages by destroying harvests and burning grains and other food-stuffs in houses. Afghanistan is an agricultural country. Animals and their products play an important role in the economy of the country, especially in the economy of the nomads who constitute about 10 per cent of its population. Refugee life and its problems are completely different from those of the Mujahideen and other civilians remaining in Afghanistan. The Afghan Refugee Commissioner has some agricultural and veterinary science activities in the camps. The International Rescue Committee under its income-generating programme has recently started some agricultural activities for the Afghan refugees in the Kohat and Hango areas.
