ABSTRACT

The interview process for this chapter involved eight electronic communication interviews conducted with the interviewee and South African Prison Leader, Mr Johan Ellis Le Grange, over the period of July to October 2018. Due to the distance (of approximately 1,434.5 kilometres) between the author (who resides in Gauteng province) and the interviewee (who resides and works in the Western Cape at the Helderstoom Correctional Management Area), one-on-one personal interviews could not be conducted. It was also deemed necessary in the development of this chapter to direct three follow-up communications with the interviewee to clarify answers and to probe for more information in order to provide an accurate and clear picture of Mr Le Grange’s views, experiences and working life in South African corrections. The following interview addresses the unique correctional environment and intricacies of South African Corrections.
