ABSTRACT

The Slovak Republic (also known as Slovakia) is in the geographic centre of Europe. It has a population of 5.5 million. The Slovak Republic was established on 1 January 1993 following the division of Czechoslovakia into two countries – the Slovak Republic, with Bratislava as its capital, and the Czech Republic. The Slovak Republic is a member of the European Union, NATO and the Eurozone. It has 18 correctional institutions capable of holding 9,500 inmates, five institutions hold only pre-trial detainees, nine hold sentenced prisoners, and four house a combination of sentenced prisoners and pre-trial detainees. All correctional institutions are operated by the state. This chapter examines the prison system in Slovakia from the perspective of Martin Lulei, Project Manager, Ministry of Labour.
