ABSTRACT

On 6 February 2019, Major Stephen Anderson discussed his career and his views of corrections in America. Over the course of the interview, Major Anderson detailed his work in the field of corrections, his views of correctional policy and his opinions with regard to the field of corrections include his concerns for the relationship between the field and the justice system as a whole, as well as the communities it is poised to serve. Major Anderson is the Director of the Cherokee County Detention Center (CDDC), a county level pretrial jail facility, in Cherokee County, South Carolina, USA. The CCDC is located in Gaffney, South Carolina and serves the surrounding county – Cherokee County – by providing temporary detention facilities and bond and arraignment proceedings for inmates charged with criminal offences that have not been adjudicated. Despite the limited use of the facility within the parameters of the American justice system as a whole, the CCDC faces challenges that are faced by countless facilities similar in nature to the CCDC as well as those with larger inmate populations and correctional responsibilities.
