ABSTRACT
This chapter anchors Part IV by delving deeper into the binary relationship between the people and elites that is viewed as intrinsic to populist movements. The chapter interrogates competing formulations of the people and explains how the binary logic of identification that unites the people against a real or imagined other is viewed as troublesome by some scholarship because of symbolic exclusions that can foster ressentiment and erode support for democratic proceduralism.
