ABSTRACT
This chapter anchors Part II by introducing readers to the interconnected problem of populism, democracy, and political pluralism. The binary distinction between the people and elites seen as delineating populism from other social mobilizations is often seen as driving anti-pluralist tendencies that are antithetical to democratic inclusiveness. This chapter reviews this key problem, which is the central focus of Part II contributions.
