ABSTRACT

Like capital punishment, the controversy about the morality and legality of abortion remains intense, even in countries that have allowed legal abortion for many years. With such controversy comes contradiction, such as the behaviour of people who oppose abortion on the grounds that this is murder of babies but seem to show little concern for the babies of other women once they are born. Such controversy has returned to the forefront, addressed in the updated edition of this chapter, with political debates and determinations in the US affecting women’s reproductive rights. In addition to a critical consideration of the arguments for and against the morality and legality of abortion, this chapter explores the possibility of a middle ground between pro-life and pro-choice positions.
