ABSTRACT

The history of the sensitivity to the weather has become a major datum in the history of emotions. For a long time, there has been the practice of recording the bores of meteorology, mainly in order to forecast the state of the crops. From the second half of the 18th century, what can be described as “meteorological self” is emerging with more or less force. Henceforth, as evidenced by the reading of the writing of oneself, especially those of the diary, the variations of the weather induce the vagaries of the self. Attention to meteorology allows the individual to stay away from the event, to analyze the impact of time on mood, anxiety, or joy. At the same time, the rise of the code of the sublime, in the aesthetic field, stimulates the attention paid to the meteorological manifestations. Subsequently, the sensitivity to the weather has deepened until today, obsessing the entire population.
