ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses British perspectives on French cultural history. Firstly, it examines the factors that have shaped British perceptions of French culture, taking as an example the areas of French culture that attracted attention in Britain during the period after World War II. Secondly, it investigates the very considerable work of British scholars in researching the cultural history of France. And thirdly, it examines how British scholars have engaged with their French counterparts in studying the field of cultural history. It argues that the British fascination with France’s cultural history has rarely been reciprocated by French scholars, but that there is much to be gained from increased dialogue across the Channel.
