ABSTRACT

After exploring the multiple origins of cultural history in France-from British cultural studies up to the Californian linguistic turn, including the French “histoire des representations"-Jean-Yves Mollier reminds us that it has emerged at odds with Marxism, but still maintains a strong relationship to social history. Also linked to gender studies and postcolonial studies, and more broadly to the development of social sciences, cultural history has spread from the end of the 1950s, as shown in the contributions to this book.
