ABSTRACT
In the current climate of competing paradigms rather than grand theories, Chapter 5 turns to the rise of important new theories from neuroscience and evolutionary perspectives. The second edition made substantive additions to these sections to introduce readers to cutting edge research in the areas of emotion-based/implicit moral reasoning and Evolutionary Development (“Evo-Devo”). After presenting and evaluating theories by Darcia Narvaez and Jonathan Haidt, the chapter explains how both implicit/tacit processes and explicit/deliberative processes (e.g., Kahneman's System 1 and System 2 Thinking) influence moral decisions and actions.
