ABSTRACT
This chapter provides background for contemporary debates on Islam and blasphemy through a brief review of relevant Muslim terms and concepts, scriptural sources, the development of an Islamic law of blasphemy in theory and practice in the Middle Ages, and the impact of (de)colonization, modernization, and globalization.
