ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys the spatial mobility of the Teutonic Knights to Livonia, in Livonia and from Livonia. Mobility is a phenomenon which can reveal various developments in an organisation. The catalogue of the knight brothers in Livonia lists 1006 knights from the period 1202–1562, in 773 cases the identification of the family or at least the region of origin of a knight brother is possible. The system of recruiting, which was established in the conquest period, proved to be sustainable, and functioned until the very end of the Order in Livonia in 1561. A quick look in the catalogue of the knight brothers gives an impression that Low German areas together with the Rhine region dominated. For the reconstruction of the pattern of mobility of knights in Livonia, most of the available information concerns the elites, the Commanders and Vogts.
