ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Developing Thinking Players (DTP™) approach to coaching and teaching games and sports. The DTP™ approach is designed to encourage players to think about their game and to make smart decisions in a range of scenarios. The programme owes much to the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model and, like TGfU, it has an emphasis on participant empowerment and game-based learning. While firmly focused on these two principles, it has a distinct emphasis on tactical understanding and developing good decision making. The chapter will explain the model, offer an example using volleyball and suggest an assessment tool that aligns with the model’s areas of emphasis.
