ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the concept of a thematically focused interdisciplinary center or program can be usefully employed to bring about a more integrated program of university involvement in training and research on African food issues. It presents a list of practical suggestions for the design of similar types of interdisciplinary programs on developing country agriculture and the more specific development problems of Sub-Saharan Africa. A history of the interest in African food issues at the University of Florida shows a steady increase in the scale of research and teaching activities. The activities of Food in Africa Program within the Center can be grouped into six areas including leadership, faculty and student development, curriculum, curriculum materials development, and conference organization. Specific suggestions for faculty, student, and curriculum development include the use of interdisciplinary courses to provide a central focus for interdisciplinary faculty and student participation.
