ABSTRACT

The World Bank has argued that ‘Food policy encompasses the collective efforts of governments to influence the decision-making environment of food producers, food consumers, and food marketing agents in order to further social objectives.’ One of the main trends in the food sector is concentration. People are also travelling further to get their food and, at the same time, the food is travelling further. For consumers the modern food system offers immense attractions. Spending less money on food means we can spend more money on clothes, cars, and enjoying ourselves. Food poisoning is another externalized cost - estimated at £1 billion per year for the UK. The continuing concentration of economic power in the food system is changing who controls our food supply. The United States has equally disgusting policies and other ways of dumping unwanted foods on the poor.
