ABSTRACT

Fieldwork is the signature pedagogy in social work education. It is also known as the heart of social work education. Any student who pursues bachelor’s or a master’s in social work will be involved in concurrent fieldwork as trainee social worker. It is important to record every experience in the fieldwork in a systematic way. This chapter deals with the components of fieldwork report. There are 11 segments mentioned in the chapter, the order in which the trainee has to prepare the report. The report begins with the plan for the current day and ends with the plan of action for the next visit. The report portrays the journey of the trainee in a very comprehensive way. The second segment of the report speaks about the activities performed or the work done by the trainee in the social welfare agency. The nature and the types of roles performed by the trainee are mentioned as the third component. Since social work is praxis oriented, the classroom learning or the underpinning theories learned as part of classroom learning is practiced during the fieldwork practicum and it is given due importance in the report. Taking that forward, the tools, techniques, and the methods of social work applied are included as an integral segment. It is quite possible that the trainee may confront with ethical issues or dilemmas while working in the field. It has to be noted as part of the experiential learning which is another component of the fieldwork report. The trainee has to document the systematic observation and analysis of the work done. Competency in observing and analysing an activity/programme/situation/individuals will add more flavour to this learning exercise and the segment is mentioned as evaluation. Fieldwork training experience, if not recorded or documented categorically, will not be adding a drop of knowledge to the ocean of knowledge. Future plan is the last part of report writing.

This chapter shows the voyage of a trainee in the fieldwork practicum in the form of a report.
