ABSTRACT
The 2017 vote on independence in Catalonia did not happen randomly; rather, it is the result of hundreds of years of cultural resistance and demands for an independent state. Starting from the establishment of the Spanish March in 795 through the present day, this chapter looks at waves of mobilization for Catalan Independence through a historical lens. Discussion also includes the political transformations, legislation, and public responses to the Spanish state.
