ABSTRACT

Black Lives Matter appeared in 2013 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black adolescent in Florida. Since then, Black Lives Matter has organized chapters across the country and the world. This chapter chronicles the growth of Black Lives Matter and discusses its historical roots, its shared message and tactics, and the movement’s goals to catalyze systematic changes in the country for oppressed peoples, not limited to the Black community.
