ABSTRACT

Voekel rehearses the destructive colonization of the US by Europeans who fused white supremacy and Christian supremacy in the Doctrine of Discovery into colonial conquest. She notes that such a Christianity was predicated on a particular embodiment, sexuality, and gender. She identifies herself as “a bad, white Christian woman,” a rebel against the caged categories of a Christianity of the Doctrine of Discovery. For Voelkel, sexual and spiritual justice-seeking includes an eschatology rooted in sacred longing, and the creative charism of queer dreaming. Queering theology demands of us big enough a vision to heal bodies and embody resilience.
