ABSTRACT

In re-enacting the brutal death of Jesus, Holy Communion transforms the violent scene of Calvary into a visible healing grace that blesses its receivers. This can be seen as a queering process that inaugurates a peculiar way to reinterpret a bloody scene. In this light, Mok and Wong investigate how BDSM employs a similar approach to turn a seeming scene of sexual abuse into a pleasurable play that generates liberating erotic power. Through an analogical comparison between Holy Communion and BDSM, the chapter attempts to uncover the Eucharistic characteristics of BDSM and the queerness of the Eucharist.
